Diuretics are one of the most common drugs that are available in the market nowadays. Commonly referred to as the water pill it is considered to cure a variety of conditions, which include high blood pressure, glaucoma and edema.

What this water pills does is that it rids the body of sodium and water. The process start by initiating an increase in sodium emission, which in turns absorbs the water within the blood stream. As a result of this there is a decrease in the amount of water flowing into the blood vessels. What it does is that is that it decreases the blood pressure in the arteries. This as a result decreases the pressure if a person is suffering from a high-pressure situation.

There are a large number of diuretics available in the market but they can basically be divided into three categories. Each of these different types of diuretics affects different part of the kidney. Each of these types has different functions, different side affects and different precautions.

There has always been a debate on to which kind of diuretics should a doctor normally prescribe. Medical experts form the joint national committee on prevention; detection evaluation and treatment of high blood pressure have recommended the use of thiazide as the first choice diuretic for the treatment and prevention of high blood pressure.

Like most other drugs of its category diuretics also comes with its own set of side affects. However most of these side affects are not that severe in this case and tend to wane off with time.
